Quality and format notes
FLAC preserves every sample of the original recording; MP3 makes music portable at a fraction of the size. A common pattern: keep FLAC as the permanent library and create MP3 copies for phones, car stereos and players with limited storage.
Converting FLAC to MP3 discards audio data permanently. Keep the FLAC original — converting an MP3 back to FLAC later will not restore the lost detail.
Frequently asked questions
What bitrate suits music converted from FLAC?
256–320 kbps is the usual range for music. Differences from lossless are subtle on typical listening equipment; lower bitrates are fine for background listening.
Why keep the FLAC files at all?
Libraries outlive devices. Lossless masters let you re-encode for any future format or fix tags without quality loss, while each lossy-to-lossy conversion compounds damage.
Do album tags and artwork survive?
Some metadata may not carry over on re-encoding. Test one album, check its tags in your player, then batch the rest of the library.
