Quality and format notes
AC3 carries 5.1 surround sound from DVDs and some cameras; MP3 is stereo. Conversion downmixes the channels to stereo — right for listening, not for home-theatre passthrough.
The surround downmix changes channel balance by design. Keep the AC3 when a receiver can decode it, and convert a sample first to check you like the stereo mix.
Frequently asked questions
What happens to the 5.1 channels?
They are downmixed to stereo. Dialogue, music and effects survive; the surround placement obviously does not.
Why convert AC3 at all?
Portable players, some TVs and editors have no AC3 decoder. MP3 plays everywhere and is far simpler to work with.
Does converting lose quality?
AC3 is itself lossy, and MP3 adds its own encoding. At a reasonable bitrate the stereo result keeps the source's audible quality.
