Quality and format notes
AVIF supports transparency and efficient lossy compression, but encoding can take longer than WebP. For photos and detailed images, begin with balanced quality and inspect the result at its intended display size.
AVIF can be larger than the original when lossless or maximum quality is selected, or when the image is small or unusually simple. Quality numbers are not directly comparable between formats; compare both appearance and actual bytes.
Frequently asked questions
AVIF or WebP — which should I choose?
AVIF usually reaches smaller files at the same visual quality but encodes more slowly; WebP is faster and supported slightly more widely. Convert one image to both and compare the reported sizes.
Why is my AVIF larger than the PNG?
Lossless or maximum-quality AVIF, very small images and extremely simple graphics can all produce a larger file. Lower the quality or keep the PNG when the result is not smaller.
Can every device display AVIF?
All current major browsers can, but some older editors, apps and operating systems cannot. Keep the original PNG if the image must open everywhere.
