Quality and format notes
AVIF decodes to exact pixels and PNG re-stores them losslessly, transparency included. Useful when a workflow — an older CMS, some editors — rejects AVIF uploads.
PNG is usually larger than AVIF, sometimes much larger for photographs. Artifacts baked in by the original AVIF encoding cannot be undone.
Frequently asked questions
Does AVIF to PNG lose quality?
No further loss. The AVIF decodes to exact pixels and PNG stores them losslessly; what you see is what the AVIF contained.
Why did the file get bigger?
AVIF compresses far more efficiently than PNG, especially for photos. Growth is the normal cost of moving to a lossless, universally readable format.
Is transparency preserved?
Yes. AVIF alpha channels carry over to PNG exactly. Use the AVIF to JPG page only when transparency does not matter.
