Quality and format notes
WebP supports transparency and can reduce the size of many PNG images. Balanced quality is a useful starting point for web images; compare fine text and edges before choosing a lower quality setting.
A smaller result is not guaranteed, especially for tiny or already optimized images. The workspace reports the actual size change. Choose the lossless quality mode when exact decoded pixels matter.
Frequently asked questions
Is WebP always smaller than PNG?
No. Small images, icons and PNGs that were already optimized can come out the same size or larger. Check the actual size change the workspace shows for each file.
Does WebP keep transparency?
Yes. Both lossy and lossless WebP support an alpha channel, so transparent areas in your PNG survive the conversion.
Which quality setting should I choose?
Start with balanced quality for web graphics. If the image contains small text or fine edges, inspect those areas at full size before lowering quality; use lossless when pixels must match exactly.
