Quality and format notes
PNG re-encodes the decoded JPG pixels without adding new compression artifacts and supports transparency, which JPG lacks. It suits images headed for further editing, where repeated JPG saves would gradually degrade quality.
The PNG result will not look better than the JPG source — conversion cannot reverse JPG compression. Expect noticeably larger files, particularly for photographs.
Frequently asked questions
Does JPG to PNG improve image quality?
No. The pixels are exactly what the JPG decoded to. PNG prevents further loss in later editing steps but cannot restore detail the JPG encoding already discarded.
When is converting to PNG worth it?
Before image editing that saves the file repeatedly, when a transparent background is required, or when an application or form accepts only PNG input.
Why is the PNG so much larger than my JPG?
Photographs compress poorly in lossless formats. PNG stores every pixel exactly, which costs space; JPG stays small precisely by discarding data.
