Quality and format notes
BMP stores raw pixels with almost no compression — paint programs and old software screenshots. JPG cuts the size dramatically at a quality you control.
Line art and screenshots with small text can soften in JPG; the lossless alternative for those is PNG. The workspace shows the real size change per file.
Frequently asked questions
Why are BMP files so large?
They store every pixel uncompressed, often plus padding. A JPG copy is typically a small fraction of the size at visually similar quality.
Does BMP have transparency to worry about?
Usually not — most BMP files are fully opaque. JPG has no transparency support regardless, so nothing is lost in practice.
Should I use PNG instead of JPG?
For screenshots, diagrams and anything with text, yes — PNG is lossless and those images compress well. JPG suits photographic content.
