Quality and format notes
PNG keeps every pixel the way TIFF does, at sizes friendlier to the web and in apps that do not read TIFF. The right choice for text scans, line art and images needing alpha.
PNG will not shrink photographic scans the way JPG does — that is the price of lossless. Multi-page TIFF files convert as their first page.
Frequently asked questions
TIFF or PNG — are they not both lossless?
They are. PNG is lighter on features you rarely need and far more widely supported on the web and in everyday apps.
Do multi-page TIFFs convert fully?
Only the first page becomes a PNG. Split the file first when you need every page as its own image.
Is transparency preserved?
Yes. TIFF alpha channels carry over to PNG exactly.
